Climate Change Project

Pakistan Youth Led Climate Initiative

Project Introduction

Pakistan is the fifth largest young country in the world and has the largest generation of young people ever recorded in its national history — 27% are aged between 15 and 29. Large disparities exist among the youth demographic, depending on gender, location, and socio-economic background.

The project is being implemented in partnership with the British Council, where it plays a key role in creating an enabling environment for equitable inclusion of youth at local, national, and international levels of policy and decision-making on climate action, leading to the implementation of climate mitigation and adaptation approaches. Key stakeholders engaged include CSOs, academia, government, local communities, and political and religious leaders advocating for climate action, increased youth inclusion, leadership, and engagement.

The major objective of the project is that young women and men in Pakistan are aware of social and ethical values, and respectful of diversity, by taking inclusive and responsible actions to influence the local, national, and global sustainable development agenda on climate action.

PYLI aims to reach young people in rural and semi-urban areas — with intersectionality of gender, age, education, socio-economic status, disability, and religion — as well as at-risk youth groups who are directly impacted by climate change and its negative effects on human lives, livelihoods and ecosystems.

  • More than 600 youth have been trained on climate change through 16 training workshops of 4 days each.
  • 2 Green Youth Clubs have been established in Malakand and Dir.
  • The trained youth have implemented 96 community based social action projects focused on various themes of climate change.
  • 2 community events were held in Malakand and Dir, inviting the engaged youth, government officials, academia, media and community leaders.
